ANGELS NEVER DIE
Video, Sound Art, Spoken Word

A poetic short directed by Shane Dedman shot on location at the gravesites of the Brothers Grimm, Alter Schöneberg St. Matthäus Kirchhof, Berlin, Germany

[I never quite had a childhood
yet I read in the trees
‘til the sun went down.

Rain clouds and nightmares kept me up,
and the daytime still felt like fairy tales.

I’d sit in my sanctuary,
on the rock in the clearing,
and wait for the fairies to appear;
dream visions of glory amidst the waking horror of my youth.

I was a winged subordinate
to the cult of flames.
I bared a boulder
while trying to fly;
kept me sunken to the sinkhole.
And there I played my lyre—
‘til the beast went to sleep.

When salvation came,
I was called to be a messenger;
the constellations aligned, and I was relinquished—

I soared so high, I lept continents
and found euphoria in a seashell that whispered:

“Forgive yourself for the things done unto you,
Seek those that give you the strength to thrive,
Trust in your missteps,
And dream as big as the sun.”

I lamented until the soot oxidized to honey,
and drank from the pain;
the sting gave leave to rebirth…
